Professor Wong obtained his Bachelor of Social Sciences degree at the University of Hong Kong in 1971, his M.Phil. degree at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and his B.Litt. and D.Phil. degrees at the University of Oxford. His academic career began with teaching in the Department of Sociology at the University of Hong Kong where he was later appointed Professor and Head of Department. In 1985, he went to Harvard University as a Visiting Scholar of the Harvard-Yenching Institute for a year. From 1987-89, he served as the founding Director of the Social Sciences Research Centre of the University of Hong Kong. He was appointed Director of the Centre of Asian Studies in 1996, and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University from 1998-2000.
