Served, Since 1970, as a library consultant and lecturer in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand under the sponsorship of the Asia Foundation,, Council for International Exchange of Scholars, the Food and Agricultural Organization of U.N., Friedrich-Ebert Stiftung, the International Development Research Centre of Canada, Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership, OCLC Online Computer Library Center, the Library Bureau of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia, United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, U.S. Agency for International Development, U.S. Information Agency, World Bank, and others.

Was appointed as a consulting professor by Xi’an Jiaotung University; a visiting professor by Beijing Normal University, Beijing Post and Telecommunication University, Hunan Medical University, Nankai University, Northeast Normal University, Peking University, Sichuan University, Wuhan University, etc. in China;

Also served as an Advisor of the National Library of China, the Library of Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Central Library (Taiwan), Tsinghua University Library, Shenzhen Library, and Zhejiang Provincial Library; an Academic Consultant of the Wuhan Library of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; and an Honorary Research Librarian of the Lanzhou Library of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Was a library consultant of the Science & Technology Information Center of the National Science Council in Taiwan, the City University of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong Baptist University.

Served as an external evaluator for the Department of Library and Information Science, National Taiwan University.

Honors

Recipient of distinguished service awards from the American Library Association, Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association, Chinese American Librarians Association, Chinese Academic and Professional Association in Mid-America, Library Association of China (Taiwan), OCLC, OhioLINK, Ohionet, Ohio University Foundation, U.S. Information Services, and others.

Was the 1983 Outstanding Administrator of Ohio University, the 1987 Ohio Librarian of the Year, the 1991 ALA John Ames Humphrey Award winner for contributions to International Librarianship, and the 1999 Ohio Hall of Fame Librarian.

In August 1999, Ohio University named a new library building as the Hwa-Wei Lee Library Annex and the first floor in the Main Library as the Hwa-Wei Lee Center for International Collections.
