Education and Career

Hsiao Hung-Te graduated from Taipei's Chinese Cultural University with his bachelor's degree. He served for two years of national military service on Jinmen island, crossing the Taiwan Strait on naval ships several times. This gave him experience of military life, which has stimulated his interest in military history. He studied for his master's degree in the Department of History Studies of Peking University. During his study, USA President Bill Clinton, the South Korean President and many countries' presidents made speeches at this university which aroused his interest in the pre-modern history of Chinese international relations. After returning to Taiwan he taught briefly in a high school, then moved to the Australian National University to work on his PhD.
